This course is for ESL teachers who want to learn how to prepare their students for the high-stakes IELTS test. It is a 17-week (4-month) course, a mix of self-led learning via MTS’s Moodle Learning Management System platform, along with videoconference face-to-face contact (guided learning hours) with expert IELTS teacher trainers. The teacher trainers will also carry out ongoing assessment and moderation of attendees.

I.Course outline and biographies of trainers
A 45-hour comprehensive professional development course tailored for educators moving from child-focused teaching to facilitating English learning for adolescents and young adults preparing for the IELTS test. The course blends practical methodology, foundational TESOL principles, and IELTS-specific strategies with experiential learning, reflection, and peer feedback.
Participants will explore classroom management for older learners, develop grammar and vocabulary strategies, gain fluency in instructional language, and build confidence in preparing students for standardised assessments like IELTS. The course is delivered in three practical modules, each capped with formative assessment via IELTS Mock Tests. At least 90% attendance and active participation required.
Progression: Following the final IELTS Mock Test, participants who have scored a minimum of band 7.0 in each of the test’s components and successfully completed the course will have a guaranteed place on the Introduction to Teaching IELTS course.

Our teacher trainers:

Roisin Diamond has been teaching English for nearly ten years in Ireland and overseas. She is qualified to teach EAP, OET and IELTS and has also led CPD workshops and teacher training. She is a speaking examiner for Cambridge and a speaking and writing examiner for Oxford international group. She has recently qualified with an associate certificate in instructional design for digital courses. Roisin has codesigned this course and works at MTS as an IELTS tutor and teacher trainer as well as an Instructional Design Lead.

Martin Thomas has been an English language teacher for over 25 years in both state and private schools in Hungary, Spain, Italy and the UK. He now specialises in IELTS preparation. He has written a range of English materials for Pearson and Macmillan and co-authored two IELTS books on Writing Tasks 1 & 2. Martin works for MTS as an EFL/IELTS teacher and teacher trainer, course designer and content creator.
